Community

      Paul currently serves as a board member of Teaching Artists of Rochester (TA-ROC), a not-for-profit organization which places a culturally diverse group of independent teaching artists in K-12 schools throughout Monroe County. He also served as board member and then President of the Landmark Society of Western New York, where he produced “Landmarks in Music – the Rochester Jazz Collection”, honoring the contributions of Rochester’s great musicians to the community. Nunes also served as counsel to the Rochester Contemporary Arts Center (ROCO), and Arts for Greater Rochester.

     Paul is also a frequent keynote and featured presenter on the importance of music in the early childhood educational environment at conferences sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and its regional affiliates.

     Paul’s practice is a varied one, including insurance defense, trusts & estates litigation, business litigation, intellectual property, and personal injury cases, notably involving food-borne illnesses. With extensive experience on both sides of the plaintiff-defendant divide, he is frequently selected to serve as a mediator in State and Federal Court cases throughout the region.

      Nunes’ litigation successes include representing the country of Australia in Rochester's Fast Ferry litigation, and a class action suit against the State of New York, on behalf of thousands of victims (many of them children), who became ill after exposure to cryptosporidium at the Seneca Lake Spray Park.

      Paul started practicing law, first as the clerk to a NY State Supreme Court Appellate Division Judge and then as a litigation associate at the Wall Street firm of Thacher Proffitt & Wood. He moved to Rochester NY to join the litigation department of Underberg & Kessler, where he worked for over 30 years. He formed Heisman Nunes & Hull LLP in 2019.

      “I’m proud to have received the Empire State Counsel Award for my pro bono work and am humbled to have been selected by my peers as a Best Lawyer and Super Lawyer for more than 18 years,” says Paul.

     He is an accomplished keyboard and guitar player and has won multiple awards for his CDs of original music.
